Current Obsession: Abstract Collages
Bonus: one of my favourite creative warm-up exercises.
Hi Studio Mates,
When looking at my illustration work, you might not expect that I’ve always had a weak spot for collage as a medium. My illustrations are usually figurative, but I love abstract art. And I’ve always used collaging as a way to find abstract, and less literal, ways to express myself. In this newsletter I’ll share my favourite abstract collages by some of the great masters, and a creative warm-up exercise that I use all the time to get my creative mood going.
A while back I gave a few collage workshops with Atelier Bodil Jane, and while everyone was working on their collage, I turned on a slideshow with inspirational images from art history. You’ll find a few, that are in the public domain, throughout this newsletter, and hopefully they inspire you to create something abstract yourself. Other collages that I love, but couldn’t share here because of the copyrights, are for example Guitar and Wine Glass by Pablo Picasso (1912) and Columbus Circle by Ellsworth Kelly (1957). I also love Andy Warhol’s Space Fruit series (1979) which technically aren’t collages, but definitely have a similar feel.
